Car Air Conditioning Makes Trips Bearable

On a hot summer day, there is no better feeling than jumping into a car and cranking up the air conditioning. The rush of cold air that comes flowing out of the vents is like heaven on earth. At that moment, there is no better feeling than that.

Basically stated, car air conditioning is an air condition unit that has been sized down to fit the restraints of a motor vehicle. When the units first debuted in vehicle, the function was a scaled down version of an air condition unit found inside of a house. Modern technology has taken this primary function and added convenience to it. Many new vehicle models on the market now offer the adjustable option of setting driver side and passenger side air conditioning temperatures separately. This is equivalent to bringing the comforts of home out onto the open road.

There is one system that takes things a step further. Thermotronic is an advanced system that handles the temperature control of air conditioning for each seat inside the vehicle. This is achieved through an elaborate system of sensors that measure varying factors such as current seat temperature, sunlight entering the vehicle, humidity and pollutants in the air. As the varying factors go up or down, the system controls the vents accordingly to provide the right amount of air conditioning to keep occupants comfortable.

In order for car air conditioning to function properly, all relevant factors must be in working order. The main elements to a car air conditioning system are the compressor; the refrigerant; the expansion valve and the evaporator.

A compressor functions as the piece of the puzzle that pushes refrigerant through to the condensing coils located near the car radiator. Compressing the refrigerant gas creates heat. This heat is passed to the condensing coils where it mixes with pre-existing refrigerant. From here, the hot air moves toward the evaporator where is it flushed outside the vehicle.

Remaining refrigerant gas cools down and turns back into a liquid. This cooler liquid moves forward to the evaporator and then on into the condensing coils of the vehicle. Once the hot air reaches the condensing coils, it evaporates leaving cool air behind. The air conditioning system blows the cool air across the evaporator and into the interior of the vehicle. With cold air delivered, the refrigerant starts the whole process over again.

There are a number of things than can malfunction with a car air conditioning system. In the event that a vehicle owner is a trained mechanic and knows the ins and outs of the system, then repairs can be completed in a do-it-yourself manner. In most situations, this will not be the case. It is highly advisable to take the vehicle to an auto mechanic who specializes in air conditioning repair.

Depending on the nature of the repair, it can be an inexpensive venture. If a major part requires maintenance or replacement, air conditioning repairs can be on the expensive side. In either case, the piece of mind that comes from having air conditioning on a hot day is priceless.
